RHHD urges Henrico residents to get seasonal respiratory virus vaccines

The Richmond and Henrico Health Districts are encouraging residents to make appointments for influenza, COVID-19 and RSV immunizations as the fall respiratory illness season begins.

Flu vaccination is recommended for nearly everyone age six months and older, according to the district. Health officials said the best time to receive the seasonal vaccine is by the end of October, although vaccination later in the season can still provide protection. Flu activity typically increases in early October, often peaks in January or February, and can continue into May.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines are available for people age 6 months and older. RHHD said vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of severe illness, including older adults, infants and pregnant people. Residents should confirm their eligibility and timing with a health care provider or pharmacist.

For RSV, adults ages 75 and older are advised to receive a single dose. Adults ages 50 to 74 who have certain health conditions should discuss the vaccine with a health care provider. Adults 50 and older who previously received an RSV vaccine do not need another dose this season, RHHD said.

Infants can receive protection against severe RSV through either a maternal vaccine during pregnancy or a monoclonal antibody product given to the baby. Pregnant women and parents of newborns should discuss the options with their health care providers.

Vaccination appointments are available through primary care providers, pharmacies and RHHD clinics. The Henrico East clinic can be reached at 804-652-3190, and the Henrico West clinic at 804-501-4522. Spanish-bilingual staff are available at both locations.

Residents without adequate insurance may be eligible for no-cost immunizations through Virginia Vaccines for Adults or Virginia Vaccines for Children. Provider searches and clinic information are available through RHHD's immunization page. Additional statewide information is available on the Virginia Department of Health respiratory illness page.
