10 ways to support the Henrico Citizen

Local journalism is stronger when the community is part of it.

For 25 years, the Henrico Citizen has worked to provide independent, locally focused journalism about the people, places, issues and institutions that shape Henrico County.

If you value having a local news organization dedicated specifically to Henrico, there are many ways you can help us continue — and strengthen — that work. Some cost nothing at all.

1. Subscribe to our free email newsletter

Our weekday email newsletter is one of the easiest ways to stay connected with Henrico. Subscribe for free and we'll bring the most important local news directly to your inbox.

2. Read and engage with our journalism

Simply reading the Citizen regularly matters. Open our newsletters, click through to stories that interest you and make the Citizen part of your regular news routine. An engaged readership helps demonstrate the value and reach of independent local journalism.

3. Share the Citizen with others

Know someone who cares about what's happening in Henrico? Forward them our newsletter, share one of our stories or encourage them to subscribe. Word of mouth remains one of the most valuable ways you can help us grow.

4. Make a contribution

Reader support helps us pay reporters, cover more stories, investigate important issues and keep our journalism accessible to everyone.

You can contribute directly to the Henrico Citizen, and we also offer an option to make a tax-deductible contribution through our partnership with Report for America.

Every contribution helps, regardless of its size.

5. Encourage your company or organization to advertise with us

Advertising with the Henrico Citizen is a way for local businesses and organizations to reach an engaged Henrico audience while also supporting independent local journalism.

If your employer, business or organization wants to reach Henrico residents, encourage its leaders or marketing team to consider the Citizen.

6. Consider making a larger investment in local journalism

For individuals, families, businesses and organizations with the capacity to do more, larger contributions can have an especially meaningful impact.

Major gifts can help us add reporting resources, undertake ambitious journalism projects, invest in new ways to serve readers and build a sustainable future for independent local news in Henrico.

If you're interested in discussing a significant contribution or another way to support our work, we'd be happy to talk with you.

7. Encourage foundations and community funders to support Henrico journalism

Strong local journalism is an important part of a strong community.

Foundations, corporations and philanthropic organizations increasingly recognize local journalism as essential community infrastructure — alongside the other institutions that help communities remain informed, connected and engaged.

If you have relationships with local or regional foundations, charitable organizations or other funders, encourage them to consider supporting independent journalism in Henrico through grants, sponsorships or other funding.

8. Purchase a digital artistic print from our Henrico Collection

Celebrate Henrico while supporting local journalism by purchasing a digital artistic print from The Henrico Collection, our series of artistic images based upon original photographs taken by Citizen staff members.

The collection highlights recognizable places, landmarks and scenes from throughout Henrico County — and your purchase helps support the journalism we produce here.

9. Tell us what you think

We conduct reader surveys twice each year because we want the community to help shape our coverage and our future.

When you see one of our surveys, please take a few minutes to participate. Your responses help us understand what we're doing well, what we could do better and what Henrico residents want from their local news organization.

10. Send us news, tips and ideas

Some of our best stories begin with a reader.

Email us when you know about something newsworthy, have a story idea, see something happening in your community or think there's an issue we should investigate. You don't have to be a journalist to help us find important stories — you just have to tell us what you're seeing.

Every form of support matters

You don't have to write a check to make a difference.

Read us. Subscribe. Share our work. Send us a tip. Take a survey. Buy a print. Advertise with us. Make a contribution. Introduce us to someone who can help.

Every one of those actions helps strengthen the Henrico Citizen and our ability to continue providing independent local journalism for this community.

Thank you for being part of it.
