Richmond Walk to Defeat ALS scheduled for Nov. 7

The Richmond Walk to Defeat ALS is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, according to the ALS Association.

The walk begins at 11 a.m. at CarMax Park, 2705 North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond. The event, presented locally by Slurry Pavers, supports the ALS Association's work in research, patient care and advocacy. Participants may register, fundraise or donate; those who raise at least $100 are eligible for a commemorative walk T-shirt.

ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological illness that affects the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement. Over time, it can impair walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing. The ALS Association says its national walk program is a major source of support for services and research into treatments.

Rebecca Wilde of Audacy is scheduled to emcee the event.
