Obituary - Energelia G. Jones
Energelia G. Jones, aka Nellie and Nene passed on June 6, 2026 after a lengthy battle with dementia. She was born May 20, 1942 in the city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Melton R. Jones, of Glen Allen, Virginia, and two daughters, Mavel U. Jones of Norwalk, CT and Christina V. Jones of Washington, DC.
She was part of a large family with six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three of her brothers and both sisters. Her sisters live in Santo Domingo along with one brother. The two remaining brothers reside in Miami, Florida. Energelia is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
Nellie had several hobbies including gardening, especially flowers and trees she would find in the forest. On one occasion she planted a small tree in the backyard not knowing the species. It turned out to be a gumball tree.
Nellie fell in love with hiking while residing in Colorado. She and her husband hiked at least once a week weather permitting. Since she was from a tropical country, she found it amazing to be able to see snow on top of the mountains all year long.
Most of all she enjoyed visiting her daughters in DC and New York. Once she and her husband were both retired, they traveled to NY and DC on a monthly basis.
She spent the last eighteen months at Hermitage Three Chopt, a memory care center in Richmond Virginia. Her battle with dementia was very emotional for the family, but throughout this ordeal she was able to communicate love and bravery to those around her.
She loved to travel and once retired she went to Santo Domingo at least twice a year to visit family. She lived in several places in the US as she moved with her husband’s career. She lived in Maryland, DC, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia. She spent most of the time raising family but did work at several jobs. She was a data entry specialist for IBM in Longmont, Colorado, a receptionist at the Suburban Country Club in Baltimore, and briefly worked at Circuit City cooperate office in Richmond, VA before permanently retiring in 2004.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Rev. J. Michael Hickman, officiating.
