KC and the Sunshine Band deliver nostalgic hits at After Hours Innsbrook
Fans of all ages turned out at Innsbrook After Hours to celebrate the music of KC and the Sunshine Band, as the legendary disco and funk group brought decades of hit songs to Henrico July 9 for an evening of dancing and nostalgia.
The crowd included concertgoers from throughout Virginia as well as visitors from neighboring states. Many longtime fans attended alongside younger family members, introducing a new generation to the band's catalog of classic hits.
Opening the concert was Nashville-based pop-rock artist Creigh Riepe, a native of Charlotte Court House, Virginia. Riepe performed several original songs, including "Devil Go Home," as he warmed up the audience ahead of the evening's headlining performance.
KC and the Sunshine Band opened its set with "Shake Your Booty," immediately drawing much of the audience to its feet. The group continued with a string of its signature hits, including "Boogie Shoes" and "I'm Your Boogie Man," keeping the crowd engaged throughout the early portion of the performance.
A brief interruption occurred when a generator issue temporarily cut power to the stage lights. During the pause, frontman Harry Wayne Casey, known professionally as KC, shared stories about the band's history and reflected on his experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also joked about his own weight gain during that period, deadpanning that he might consider changing the name of the band to "KFC and the Sunshine Band."
Late in the performance, KC and the Sunshine Band played fan favorites "That's the Way (I Like It)," "Get Down Tonight," and "So Glad We Got Together." The enthusiastic response from the audience earned the group a standing ovation, prompting an encore featuring a medley of "I Gotta Feeling" and "Please Don't Go."
