United Airlines will begin offering nonstop flights between Richmond International Airport and San Francisco in March 2027, giving Richmond-area travelers a new direct connection to the West Coast.

The airline announced Oct. 30 that the new route will begin March 28, with twice-weekly flights operating on Thursdays and Sundays.

San Francisco will become the sixth nonstop destination served by United from Richmond International Airport, joining Chicago, Newark, Washington Dulles, Houston and Denver.

“We’re excited to expand our network in Virginia with nonstop service between Richmond and San Francisco,” said Mark Weithofer, United's managing director of domestic network planning. “This route gives Richmond travelers a convenient, nonstop connection to the Bay Area and access to destinations around the world through United’s extensive global network in San Francisco.”

In addition to providing direct access to Northern California, the route will offer Richmond passengers connections to international destinations through United's San Francisco hub.

Perry Miller, president and CEO of Richmond International Airport, said the new service will expand travel opportunities for residents and businesses throughout Central Virginia.

“As a United hub, San Francisco offers travelers convenient one-stop connections to destinations across the Pacific, including Sydney, Singapore, and Hong Kong, while expanding access to cities throughout the West Coast,” Miller said. “This new service clearly supports RIC’s vision of being the region’s preferred gateway to the world.”

The announcement adds another transcontinental travel option for passengers using Richmond International Airport, which serves the greater Richmond region from its location in eastern Henrico County.

Airport officials did not announce flight times, fares or the type of aircraft that will serve the new route.
