Tuckahoe Sports completes 6,600-square-foot training center expansion
Tuckahoe Sports Inc. has completed a 6,600-square-foot expansion and renovation of its training center at 2450 Little League Drive in Henrico.
The project added seven retractable batting cages on a new second floor. Four of the cages measure 13 feet by 70 feet, allowing pitchers and catchers to conduct live at-bats indoors. The nonprofit also installed new turf on both floors, enlarged its workout area, added a pitching lab and reconfigured the first-floor cages.
The larger workout area will support a new in-house strength and conditioning program. Tuckahoe Sports officials said the additional cages and training space will allow more individual and team sessions and give athletes more opportunities to practice in game-like conditions.
Tuckahoe Sports provides baseball and softball training and operates the Mid-Atlantic Orioles travel program. It also partners with Tuckahoe Little League, Henrico County and local nonprofit organizations. The expansion was funded through fundraising by TSI and its foundation; the organization did not disclose the project cost.
The organization will celebrate the newly-improved facility with a free event open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
The event, emceed by Todd “Parney” Parnell, will include facility tours, appearances by Richmond Flying Squirrels mascots Nutsy and Natasha, a Wiffle Ball home-run derby for children 11 and younger, and a throwing competition with a radar gun for participants 12 and older. A raffle to win autographed baseballs also is planned.
