This Day in Henrico History: Sept. 15 – Henrico dedicates a new Fire Station No. 3 in Highland Springs
On Sept. 15, 2012, Henrico County formally dedicated its new Fire Station 3 at 1310 East Washington Street near North Airport Drive.
The 11,160-square-foot station had opened that July, replacing a 2,790-square-foot station about a mile away that dated to 1956.
The new facility included three drive-through apparatus bays with space for an engine company, brush truck, ambulance and fire marshal's vehicle. It also became home to Henrico's Battalion 2 chiefs, who oversaw six fire stations in eastern Henrico.
Designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, the station was designated as an area command center that could help coordinate operations during major emergencies. An emergency generator was capable of powering it for three days before refueling.
Henrico voters had authorized funding for the project through the county's 2005 bond referendum. The station cost $4.5 million and was developed to meet standards established by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.
The Sept. 15 dedication included a ribbon-cutting, station tours and a community picnic.
