Obituary - Marcus Lemel Fairwell
Mr. Marcus Lemel Fairwell, 55, of Henrico, Virginia, passed away on June 11, 2026. Born on August 12, 1970, in Rochester, New York, Marcus lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his career.
Marcus graduated from East High School in Rochester, where he excelled in various sports, with football being his favorite. His passion for teamwork and discipline carried over to his professional and personal life. After high school, Marcus proudly served in the United States Army as a Sergeant. During his military career, he completed several tours and was honorably discharged – a testament to his courage and dedication.
Following his military service, Marcus embarked on a diverse and accomplished career. He began as a correctional officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he was known for treating inmates with respect and fairness. He later transitioned to Brinks as a Cash Vault Operator before becoming an Assistant Director at The James Center. In this role, Marcus earned the admiration and appreciation of his staff for his leadership and kindness. Most recently, he served as a devoted Captain at Riverfront.
Family was the cornerstone of Marcus’s life. He was deeply devoted to his daughter, Mari Charlene Louise Fairwell. After the passing of his beloved wife, Ramona, Marcus embraced the dual role of mother and father to Mari with unwavering love and dedication. His efforts were nothing short of phenomenal. Marcus was also a cherished son to Marilyn and Carmelo Vazquez; a loving brother to Shalena Vazquez-Bebbs (Frank), Maritza Vazquez, Melania Kelley (Dewayne), and Eboni Fairwell; and an adored uncle to all of his nieces and nephews.
Marcus was predeceased by his loving and faithful wife, Ramona Shealy Fairwell. Their love was strong, steady, and unconditional - a bond that blessed them with their daughter, Mari, whom they cherished deeply. Ramona was truly one of a kind, a class act in every way, and the connection she and Marcus shared is one that will never be broken. We take comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
Marcus was also preceded in death by his father, Marvin Graham Fairwell Jr., and by his paternal grandparents, Marvin Graham Fairwell Sr. and Luddie Mae Fairwell. On his mother's side, he was preceded by his grandparents, Jimmie Moore Sr. and Elma Moore.
He was preceded in death by his devoted and special uncle, Jimmie Moore Jr., who was like a brother to him. He is also lovingly remembered by several surviving uncles who continue to honor his memory. He leaves behind his devoted aunt and uncle, Diane and Roland Drew, who loved him deeply and supported him throughout his life.
Marcus had a special bond with his extended family and childhood friends. Known for keeping a small, but close-knit circle, he maintained lifelong relationships that were deeply meaningful to him. He was admired for his compassionate nature and fun-loving spirit.
In addition to his professional achievements and family devotion, Marcus found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved attending his nephew’s football and basketball games – not just as a spectator, but as an enthusiastic supporter on the sidelines. Family gatherings brought him immense happiness, as did exploring new restaurants – though Shoney’s remained his favorite dining spot. A passionate fan of Sunday Night Football and the New York Giants, Marcus also loved traveling and especially cherished cruising.
Marcus’s legacy is one of love, strength, and compassion. Those who knew him will remember him an honorable son, an outstanding big brother, a marvelous nephew, a terrific uncle, a fun-loving cousin – and above all – a devoted father who gave everything for those he loved.
