Henrico Police confirm ninth case of rabies this year

Henrico County has recorded its ninth confirmed rabies case of 2026, after a raccoon that may have come into contact with two dogs tested positive for the disease.

Henrico Police responded Aug. 30 to the 800 block of Dirk Drive (near Chamberlayne Elementary School) following a report of a possible rabies exposure involving the dogs and raccoon.

The raccoon was submitted to the state laboratory, where it tested positive for rabies, according to police. Because the dogs may have had contact with the animal, they will be quarantined on their owner's property.

No human exposures or additional animal exposures were reported.

Henrico Police's Animal Protection Unit is reminding residents to keep their pets' rabies vaccinations current. The county holds rabies vaccination clinics twice annually, and the next one is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Western Henrico Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road.
