Fox confirmed as seventh positive rabies case of 2026 in Henrico
A fox that tested positive for rabies after a possible encounter with a dog in Henrico County marks the county's seventh confirmed rabies case of 2026, according to Henrico Police.
Police responded July 24 to the 1600 block of Hearthglow Lane after receiving a report of a potential rabies exposure involving a dog and a fox. The fox was captured and submitted to the state laboratory for testing and later confirmed to have rabies.
Because the dog may have come into contact with the infected fox, it will remain under quarantine at its owner's property, police said. No additional animal or human exposures were reported.
The Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit is reminding residents to ensure their pets' rabies vaccinations are current to help protect both animals and the community.
Henrico County will hold its next rabies vaccination clinic Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Western Henrico Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road.
Residents who observe wildlife displaying abnormal behavior or who believe they or their pets may have been exposed to rabies should contact Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000.
