Obituary – John Douglas Smith

John Douglas “Doug” Smith, 62 of Henrico, VA, beloved husband, father, and brother, passed away on April 12, 2024 at the Bon Secours Hospice House. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends in his final days. Doug remained a courageous, iron-willed man even throughout his final months, living life to the fullest with pancreatic cancer. Strong faith combined with the happiness Doug found spending time with family, friends and working shepherded the healing in his challenging journey with cancer.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Joan and Jack Smith. He is survived by his wife Michele Smith, by his sisters Lisa Quick, Terri Smith and Sheila Smith. Doug leaves behind his cherished children Declan and Liam Smith.

Doug felt his best working outside or breathing the salty air on a boat. After studying at the College of Du Page and the Chapman School of Seamanship, he worked as a commercial fisherman on clam boats, long line and pot fishing boats from the coast of Florida to the Grand Banks of Nova Scotia. His tremendous work ethic landed him a job in the plant business in Charlotte, NC where he met his wife, Michele, and later owned and operated a garden center for 10 years. In 2012, Doug moved to Richmond, VA for SiteOne Landscape Supply where he became branch manager and most recently Doug worked as an assimilation specialist in company culture and policies for recently acquired businesses.

Doug will be missed beyond measure by his family and friends.

A mass of Christian burial will be held April 20, 2024, at 2 pm, St. Mary’s Catholic Church 9505 Gayton Rd, Henrico, VA 23229.

In lieu of flowers please, consider sending a perennial from SiteOne Landscape Supply on Old Staples Mill Road. 804-377-1977.
