    ABOUT THE CITIZEN

The Henrico Citizen is Henrico County’s award-winning, hometown community news source – a publication of, by and for the people of Henrico – one of the most historic and progressive localities in the United States.

The Citizen, founded in 2001, transitioned in March 2020 to a fully digital news organization, after having published twice monthly in print since 2001. It is the only community news organization that covers all of Henrico County.

On a daily basis through a variety of platforms, the Citizen tells the stories of the people, places, events and issues that make Henrico County so unique. In addition to regular coverage of county government and education issues, the Citizen also covers community organizations and non-profits, arts and other local news issues of interest, as well as news of events in the region.

In addition to its written articles, the Citizen produces a daily weekday news podcasts – the Henrico News Minute.

The Henrico Citizen is the most honored community publication in Henrico County and is a member of the Virginia Press Association. Citizen staff members have earned 259 awards for excellence in reporting, photography and design from the VPA, the Virginia Press Women/Virginia Professional Communicators and the National Federation of Press Women since the paper’s inception.

In 2020, the Citizen earned one of just three grants awarded to Virginia news organizations from the Facebook Journalism Project’s COVID-19 Local News Relief Fund Grant Program. It also received funds from the Google News Initiative’s Journalism Emergency Relief Fund. And it was the only new host newsroom from Virginia selected to participate in the Report for America program, which helps place full-time reporters in newsrooms nationwide and in Puerto Rico. The Citizen’s new reporter will focus on education beginning in June 2021.

And, in 2021, Report for America – a national journalism service program – selected the Citizen as the only news organization from Virginia to become a new host newsroom for the program, among 64 new hosts nationally and in Puerto Rico.

The Citizen is a longtime partner of the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers and has been recognized as Virginia Blood Services’ Media Partner of the Year.

In 2011, the Citizen celebrated its 10th anniversary and the 400th anniversary of Henrico County with a special yearlong series examining some of the most important events in the county’s rich history.

In 2011, the Citizen published its first-annual “Henrico’s Top Teachers” section, recognizing 20 outstanding teachers in the county, as nominated by readers. The section publishes in May.

In 2012, the Citizen published its first-annual Henricopedia magazine, a guide to all things Henrico. The magazine publishes each September.

In 2015, the Citizen created and sponsored the inaugural two editions of Henrico Restaurant Week, which involved more than 40 restaurants and raised more than $10,000 for the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls and the Henrico Christmas Mother program.

In 2015, the Citizen published its first annual dining guide magazine, called The Plate.

The Henrico Citizen was founded in September 2001 by publisher Tom Lappas and is owned by T3 Media, LLC in Henrico, Va.
