A 40-year-old Henrico woman faces charges after bringing a weapon to Highland Springs High School Oct. 8.
The school's weapon's scanner detected the weapon in the possession of Apryl Lynn Washington at about 9:50 a.m., according to police.
The woman was attending an event at the school when the weapons scanner detected a firearm in her bag, according to police, who said the gun was loaded.
Washington was cooperative with officers and faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property.
“These weapons scanners proved successful once again in detecting a firearm on a person, prior to them entering a school,” said Henrico Chief of Police Eric English. “We are thankful for the quick actions of our SROs and school administrators for addressing this concern as expeditiously as possible.”
It was the second time in the past week that a firearm was detected at a Henrico school, following an Oct. 1 incident in which a 12-year-old Fairfield Middle School student brought a weapon to that school. She and her father later said they were unsure how the weapon ended up in her backpack.
Those are the only two instances of a weapon being detected by a scanner since they were implemented during the 2023-24 school year.
