Henrico County Public Schools will hold its annual Back-to-School Kickoff on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Henrico Sports and Events Center, 1 All Star Boulevard in Glen Allen. Designed to get students, families and staff excited for the new school year, festivities will include live entertainment and carnival-style games and activities for all ages. There also will be opportunities to meet and talk with school leaders, teachers and community organizations, as well as receive vaccinations for rising seventh and 12th graders. The Henrico County Police Animal Shelter, 10421 Woodman Road, will hold an adoption event on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the month of August, organizations across the country are encouraged to “Clear the Shelter” as part of an initiative founded 12 years ago by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and NBCUniversal Local. Henrico is coordinating with several community partners to host a local Clear the Shelter event to find loving homes for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Thanks to the Henrico Humane Society, Furbish Thrift and the William A. Harrison Jr. Foundation, many pets will be up to date on their vaccinations and spay/neuter procedures, which means they will be ready to go home with their new families upon adoption. Culture Encounters in cooperation with The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen will present the 2026 Richmond International Dance Festival on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at CACGA. The festival is a free, family-friendly celebration of culture, movement and community. More than 18 groups are participating, representing many cultures including Ghanaian, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Peruvian, Irish and Indian traditions. Twisted Carrot Farm will host a 70s-themed Summer Madness Market on Sunday, Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Farmers' Market, 6110 Lakeside Avenue. This local, collaborative market event features more than 60 makers, an interactive craft workshop, 70s music, and food and drinks from food trucks. The Indigo Girls will perform at the SERVPRO After Hours Concerts at The Innsbrook Pavilion on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The Indigo Girls’ eponymous major label debut in 1989 sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears.” Since then, the multi-Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray has recorded 16 studio albums, sold over 15 million records, and built a dedicated, enduring following across the globe. The pair are also activists, working on issues like immigration reform, LGBTQ advocacy, education, death penalty reform, and Native American rights. Special guest will be Trina Meade & Co.
