RavenCon, a science fiction/fantasy/horror convention, will take place April 24-26 at the Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway in Glen Allen. First held in 2006, RavenCon provides a dynamic forum where fans and professionals can share with others their interests in literature, art, gaming, podcasting, costuming, science and music. The Treasures of the Earth Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry Show will be held April 24-26 at the Richmond Raceway Complex, 600 East Laburnum Avenue. Explore crystals, fossils, gemstones, beads, pearls, jewelry, minerals and unique finds from around the world from more than 40 vendors. Wire wrappers who can design custom jewelry and set stones will be on site. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. The Hot Club of Cowtown will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2800 Mountain Road. This Austin-based virtuosic trio has been creating hot jazz and western swing music since the late 1990s. VDOT's Richmond District will present Highway Heroes Touch-A-Truck at Richmond Raceway on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet emergency response teams and experience live demonstrations of equipment including fire trucks, police vehicles, helicopters, tow trucks and motorcycles. There also will be kids' activities, food vendors, and educational opportunities for the whole family. The first hour will be dedicated to a more inclusive experience, offering a quieter environment for individuals who benefit from reduced noise and activity levels. Admission is free. The Heartfulness Meditation Center, 2230 East Parham Road, will offer two, free wellness workshops this weekend. On Saturday, April 25, holistic wellness coach Monica Bastola will introduce simple approaches to an Ayurveda-inspired lifestyle, better energy, nutrition and digestion, and overall balance. On Sunday, April 26, board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Rizwan Ali will cover how stress affects the mind and practical ways to improve focus, calm and emotional balance.
