The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has opened the second phase of a public survey that will help shape the 2026 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan.

The survey asks residents, business owners, community members and other travelers about freight and passenger rail, potential service improvements and safety. It takes about five to 10 minutes to complete and will remain open through early November.

The second phase follows an initial survey in March and subsequent public and stakeholder meetings. DRPT is conducting the planning process with the University of Virginia’s Institute for Engagement and Negotiation.

Virginia updates its statewide rail plan every four years to guide short- and long-term rail policy and investments. The final 2026 plan is scheduled for release in early 2027. The previous update was completed in 2022.

Participants may complete the state rail plan survey and review background information on the DRPT statewide rail plan page.
