Virginia fire officials are urging residents to use manufacturer-approved chargers and keep rechargeable devices off beds, couches and pillows during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 4-10.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on the simple steps people can take to recharge safely after an uptick in lithium-ion battery fires.

The Virginia Department of Fire Programs said lithium-ion devices should be charged on hard, flat surfaces and unplugged once fully charged. A device should no longer be used if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smokes or produces a strange smell.

E-bikes, scooters and power tools should be charged outside and away from exits, officials said. Travelers should keep devices visible while charging on airplanes and should not charge e-cigarettes or vapes aboard a plane.

More information is available through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.
