Tuckahoe Little League American 9-11 year-old baseball all-stars advance to regional tournament
The Tuckahoe Little League American 9-11 year-old baseball all-star team won the District 5 and Virginia state championships, compiling a 10-0 record along the way, and next will begin play Aug. 8 in the Tournament of State Champions in Wilson, North Carolina.
There, Tuckahoe will join state champs from West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama. Each team will play three pool play games before a single-elimination bracket for the top remaining teams begins.
In the pool play round, Tuckahoe will face Florida Aug. 8 at 11:45 a.m. Tennessee Aug. 9 at 11:45 a.m. and South Carolina Aug. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at Southern Bank Stadium.
The team raced through its District 5 tournament in June, defeating Chesterfield 12-1, Mechanicsville 5-1 and then Huguenot 2-1 and 8-4 to claim the title at Rockwood Park.
In the state tournament in Purcellville, Tuckahoe swept its six games by a combined score of 81-34. In pool play, the team defeated Lee 17-1, Virginia Beach 19-12 and York County 23-6 to advance to single-elimination play.
There, it captured a 9-8 walk-off win over Caroline County, a 10-5 win over Vienna National and a 3-2 win against Southwestern (SYA) in the championship game.
In the state tournament, the team compiled an overall batting average of better than .540, led by Cam A. (.706), Chris S. (.692) and Braxton P. (.667). Cam A. also led the team with 12 hits in the tournament, including a total of eight doubles and triples.
Carter G., Logan W., Kyle S. and Cam A. combined to shut out opponents across their 18 combined innings pitched during the tournament, while Conner T. threw five innings and allowed just one run while striking out six in the championship game.
Other members of the team are: Brendan M., Camden B., John M., Lucas L. and William M.
The team is managed by Dan Shriver, who is assisted by Jonathan Albis and Matt McGroarty.
The team is using money it raises from a GoFundMe page to help offset the costs of travel, lodging, meals and gear.
