This Day in Henrico History: Sept. 22 – Henrico Light Dragoons plan an 1858 tournament

On Sept. 22, 1858, members of the newly reorganized Henrico Light Dragoons met to plan their first tournament.

The mounted militia company's plans called for the event to be held at the Fair Grounds, with a parade beginning at 10 a.m., riding competition later in the afternoon and a ceremonial crowning immediately after the riding.

Contemporary accounts show how military organizations in antebellum Henrico also functioned as social institutions, staging public spectacles that combined horsemanship, pageantry and community entertainment.

The Henrico County Historical Society later highlighted the episode in its research into local militia and tournament traditions, citing contemporary Richmond Enquirer coverage.
