This Day in Henrico History: October 25 – Henrico releases a draft plan for new magisterial district boundaries
On October 25, 2021, Henrico County released a draft reapportionment plan proposing modest changes to the boundaries of its five magisterial districts. The proposal responded to population changes documented by the 2020 U.S. Census and was intended to keep representation balanced among districts.
The release followed the county’s October 21 announcement of public meetings to discuss the process. The first of those sessions was scheduled for October 25 at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, giving residents an opportunity to learn about the proposed changes and the legal principles guiding them.
The county’s magisterial districts are used to elect both supervisors and School Board members. A redrawn boundary can change which candidates residents vote for and which elected officials represent their neighborhood, even when the changes appear small on a countywide map.
The October 25 publication was a draft, not the final adopted district map. As a historical marker, it captures a step in the public process of translating census figures into local political representation.
