This Day in Henrico History: Nov. 2 – Henrico releases assessment of its aging zoning regulations
On Nov. 2, 2017, Henrico County released a consultant’s assessment of its zoning and subdivision ordinances, a step in a larger effort to rewrite development rules that had become difficult to navigate. The release date is identified in a contemporary analysis by the land use practice at McGuireWoods.
The review, prepared by Clarion, was meant to guide a new ordinance structure. The law firm described proposals to separate use standards from development standards, provide more flexible approaches to compliance, and introduce clearer graphic and tabular explanations.
The undertaking began earlier in 2017 as county officials sought regulations better suited to redevelopment and changing land use patterns. The assessment was a planning milestone, not the adoption of a new zoning ordinance; substantive revisions would still require a public process.
