The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond recently presented Hal Costley with the Donald Owen and Katherine Horridge Smith National Volunteer of Excellence Award.

The award is presented annually in conjunction with the national network Aging Forward, of which The Shepherd’s Center is an affiliate organization. It is designed to honor members who have demonstrated "outstanding service and lasting contributions" as volunteers.

Costley becomes the third local representative to be installed in the National Gallery of Excellence. He has served The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond as board president and treasurer and as a member of the governance, education, client services, handy helpers, and finance committees. He is a longtime volunteer driver in the Center’s transportation program that takes adults 60 and over to medical appointments or grocery shopping.

As an active contributor to the Center’s Open University, a lifelong learning program, Costley also has taught numerous courses and often participated as a lunchtime speaker.

A retired engineer, Costley is an active member of the Avery Point community as well as a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church.
