Obituary - William Garnette Stone

William Garnette "Sonny" Stone, of Henrico, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026, one day after celebrating his 87th birthday. 

Born on June 6, 1939, Sonny was the oldest of the Stone siblings and the last surviving member of that close-knit generation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sundick and Mildred Stone; his brothers, Kenny Stone (Annie Kleese) and Tommy Stone (Rose Mary); and his sisters, Phyllis Stone Ryan (Freddy) and Deborah Stone Wall (Jimmy). 

Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joan "Joanie" Stone; his daughter, Robin Stone Wiley; his son, William "Todd" Stone (Nikki); and his cherished grandchildren, Gracie and William "Ryder" Stone, who knew him as Grandpa. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will miss his steady presence and gentle spirit. 

Warmhearted and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, Sonny was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with those closest to him. A proud member of the Edge Hill Hunt Club for many decades, he treasured the friendships, traditions, and memories made there. 

Above all, Sonny was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Whether sharing stories, telling jokes, or simply enjoying time together, he took great pride in his family and found deep joy in watching them grow. Those who knew Sonny will remember his kindness and quiet strength. His devotion to family and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures will remain a legacy for all who knew and loved him. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 14, at 2:00 PM at Bliley’s – Staples Mill Road Chapel, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mattaponi Volunteer Rescue Squad.
