Obituary - Mary Virginia Armstrong Hicks
Hicks, Mary Virginia Armstrong, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 peacefully at home with her devoted son by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Shirley Eugene Hicks, Sr.; parents, Charlie and Hannah Armstrong; four sisters, Ella Mae, Lucy, Nellie, and Katie; three brothers, Letch, Johnny, and Roy; nephew, Butch Armstrong; as well as her beloved cat, KittyBoo.
She is survived by her son, Shirley Eugene Hicks, Jr.; a special great niece, Tiffany Craig; grandchildren, Akshita and Rayanesh Sharma; ‘special folks’, Puneet and Megha Sharma, Liz Hagan, and Mildred Young; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mary graduated from Albemarle High School. She worked at Michie’s Law Firm prior to marrying her high school sweetheart and moving to Richmond. After some years, Mary went to work for Sears, retiring after 27 years, serving in various positions within the Credit Department. She loved God, her family, camping, raising flowers, the mountains, and her various pets. Above all, Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and great aunt.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors and staff of VCU Health Systems, particularly Dr. Eric Cote; caregivers, Ms. Shirley, Cynthia, and Mary; and to Rev. Dr. Bart Natoli and Pastor John Bright.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm, with services beginning at 3 pm, Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at Laurel Hill Global Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Road, Henrico, Virginia 23231. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Laurel Hill Global Methodist Church or Varina Episcopal Church, 2385 Mill Rd, Richmond, VA 23231.
