Obituary - Mary Anne Ballou
Mary Anne Ballou, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at Lakewood Manor at the age of 86.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, on June 5, 1940, Mary Anne grew up in the Westover Hills neighborhood and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. She will be remembered by many as "the Card Lady," always sending thoughtful cards and messages to brighten someone's day or let them know they were loved and remembered.
Mary Anne was known for her deep love of animals, her quick wit, her generous spirit, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel special, whether through a handwritten note, a warm conversation, or a simple act of compassion. Her love for her family was unwavering, and the memories she created with them will be treasured forever.
She is survived by her children, Beth Lane, Laura McKay (Jim), and Larry Rauppius, Jr. (Michelle); her grandchildren, Will Lane (Allie), Madelyn Armstrong (Chris), Joe Lane (Ellie), Libby Dullen (Eric), Jack Lane, Laura Rauppius, L.J. Rauppius, Aiden Rauppius, and Kyle McKay; plus seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
A celebration of Mary Anne's life will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2026, at Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond, VA. A reception will follow at the church from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend as they celebrate her life and share cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to your local animal shelter or the SPCA.
Mary Anne's legacy lives on through the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the countless heartfelt cards that carried her kindness into the world.
