Obituary - Joseph William Betzala
Joseph “Joe” W. Betzala passed peacefully into his Lord’s arms on August 29, 2026, at the age of 87. Joe lived a vibrant, generous life defined by deep devotion to his family, an unwavering commitment to his community, and a joyful spirit that left an indelible mark on everyone he met. A true pillar of the community and a servant at heart, Joe dedicated decades of his life to lifting up those around him. He was a proud member of VFW Post #315 and gave tireless service as a Life Member of the Tuckahoe Rescue Squad. Deeply connected to his heritage and fellowship, Joe served as Past President of the Sons of Italy – Giuseppe Verdi Lodge #315, as well as Past President and honored Hall of Fame member of the Italian American Business and Professional Società. Among his proudest contributions was his remarkable 30 years of dedicated volunteer service with the Special Olympics, a testament to his boundless compassion and advocacy. Joe possessed a rare gift for making everyone feel valued, welcome, and heard. Whether organizing community initiatives, sharing daily laughs with his "morning commute cousin," Nina, or catching up with lifelong friends, his warmth, sharp wit, and genuine concern for all who entered his presence served as an enduring example for us all to emulate. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and Frankie Betzala. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Mary (Burleigh) Betzala; his sister, Linda Groulx (Robert); his nephews, Daniel (Virginia) and Henry (Ashlee); his dear cousin Nina; and a wide circle of extended family members and cherished friends who held a special place in his heart.
A Funeral Service will be held at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Rd, Amelia Court House, Va 23002, on September 18, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
Visitation will take place at Woody Parham, 1771 N Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23229, on September 18, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
