Medical examiner rules 9-year-old's June drowning accidental
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the June drowning death of a nine-year-old boy at a pool on North Wilkinson Road in Henrico County accidental, Henrico Police announced Oct. 27.
Police said detectives received the final autopsy report for King Overton Oct. 19. The report listed drowning as the cause of death and classified the manner of death as accidental.
Officers responded to SwimRVA North at about 2:40 p.m. June 15 after Overton was pulled unresponsive from a pool. Staff members provided care before Henrico fire personnel arrived, and the boy later died at a hospital.
Detectives are continuing to consult with the Chesterfield County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, which was appointed special prosecutor after Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor requested outside review, police said.
Earlier this month, Overton's family filed a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit against SwimRVA.
Henrico Police and Fire encourage all residents, young and old, to understand the importance of water safety. They created the “Splash Smart Henrico!” initiative to help educate community members about the basics of swimming and the resources available in the area.
