LETTERS: Reader defends Wittman's record

Dear Editor,
As a constituent of the First District, I feel compelled to address some of the claims made by Melvin Tull regarding his campaign to challenge our esteemed representative, Rob Wittman. Mr. Tull’s assertions about Congressman Wittman’s record and legislative priorities are misleading and overlook his dedicated service to the district.
First, Congressman Wittman has a proven track record of advocating for policies that support economic growth, job creation, and public safety. His efforts in securing funding for local infrastructure projects and supporting Virginia’s defense and military communities demonstrate his commitment to our district’s prosperity. To suggest that he lacks signature legislative achievements ignores the tangible results he has delivered during his time in office.
In fact, this Congress alone, Rep. Wittman has seen four bills signed into law. From combating the opioid crisis to expanding the use of 529 plans for credentialing, as well as conservation measures and strengthening U.S. telecommunications, he has been hard at work doing what is best for the people of Virginia's First District. His career has been marked by tireless advocacy and a commitment to finding common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our community.
Regarding healthcare, Congressman Wittman has consistently fought to protect Medicaid and Medicare, ensuring that vulnerable populations and seniors receive the care they deserve. His votes reflect a balanced approach aimed at sustaining these vital programs while also promoting cost-effective reforms that do not jeopardize benefits. The narrative that he supports policies harmful to rural hospitals or Medicaid beneficiaries is inaccurate and dismisses his efforts to improve healthcare access across the district. In fact, H.R. 1 – signed into law recently – establishes the Rural Health Transformation Program, which directly invests $50 billion to improve health care in rural and underserved communities.
On the issue of social security, Congressman Wittman has been a strong advocate for safeguarding retirees’ benefits. His support for policies that strengthen Social Security and his opposition to proposals that threaten these programs underscore his dedication to our seniors.
Furthermore, Tull’s characterization of Congressman Wittman as a “career politician” is misleading. Wittman’s service is rooted in a genuine commitment to his constituents, and his legislative work is driven by a desire to serve the community rather than political ambition. His voting record and constituent outreach reflect a representative who listens and responds to the needs of Virginia’s First District, and represents me and my family.
Finally, while it’s natural for political campaigns to highlight disagreements, it’s important to recognize the stability and effective representation Wittman has provided for our district over the years. The First District is fortunate to have Congressman Wittman as our representative in Congress. My family and I will continue to support him as he listens to his constituency.
Sincerely,
Connie Daniels, Henrico
