High school football roundup : Varina survives Maury, Huguenot stuns Highland Springs

The second week of the high school football season brought a little bit of everything to the area: an overtime thriller, a defensive battle decided by a single point and a major upset in the Southeast Classic.

Varina survives Maury in overtime

Varina traveled to Norfolk on Friday night for a matchup of two defending state champions (Varina in Class 4, Maury in Class 5) and came away with a 35-34 overtime victory.

The Blue Devils, led by quarterback Kaleb Wyche, built an early lead before Maury rallied. The Commodores scored twice to erase the deficit and force a 27-27 tie at the end of regulation. In overtime, Varina answered when it needed to do so.

Wyche again provided the difference, scoring on the Blue Devils’ final possession to give Varina the one-point victory. The win moves Varina to 2-0 on the season and keeps the Blue Devils among the state’s top-ranked teams.

Varina will continue its away stint at Oscar Smith on Friday, Sept. 11.

Huguenot hands Highland Springs a rare loss

Highland Springs entered Friday night’s Southeast Classic at Kreiter Stadium coming off a dominant opening-week victory over Hopewell. 

Huguenot, however, quickly changed the script. The Falcons silenced the Springers 28-7 behind the play of quarterback Charles Scott Jr. and a Huguenot passing attack that was too much for the Highland Springs defense.

Scott, a highly regarded junior quarterback who has committed to Alabama, alongside senior South Carolina commit Iveon Lewis led the Falcons in their return to the Southeast Classic.

Huguenot’s victory was a significant result against a Highland Springs program that has been one of the region’s most successful in recent years.

Brooks leads Hermitage to 2-0 start

At Hermitage, senior quarterback Myles Brooks has taken on the responsibility of leading the Panthers’ offense, and the early results have been decisive. Hermitage shut out Henrico 34-0 Sept. 3, improving to 2-0 on the season. 

Brooks followed up his 9-for-11, 146-yard, one-touchdown performance in Hermitage’s season-opening 35-7 victory over Matoaca with another efficient night against Henrico: he completed 8 of 10 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Brooks had opened the season by earning MaxPreps’ recognition as one of the game’s players of the week last week.

This week, the Panthers also received a strong contribution from sophomore running back Henry Patterson, who rushed for 94 yards on eight carries. Through two games, Hermitage has outscored its opponents 69-7.

The Panthers will face their next test Friday, Sept. 11, when they host Trinity Episcopal.
