Henrico Schools addressing HVAC concerns ahead of first day of school
Henrico County Public Schools is working to address heating, ventilation and air conditioning issues at several schools before students return to class on Aug. 24.
The district received $10 million from the county's capital improvement plan to address plumbing, electrical and HVAC needs, along with an additional $2.8 million for day-to-day operations. That initial $10 million allocation was doubled to $20 million in July. Superintendent Amy Cashwell and the division's new Chief of Operations Greg Dunaway say the funding is being used to address current repairs ahead of the first day of school.
HVAC issues affected several schools at the end of the 2025-26 school year, including Varina High, Glen Allen High and Fair Oaks Elementary, drawing concern from parents of impacted students.
Cashwell said keeping learning environments in top condition is a priority.
"An important part of making sure that our learning environments are up to par is thinking of all the things that make a top school system," Cashwell said. "And part of that is certainly our heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and making sure that they're running at top conditions at all times."
