A weekly look at some of what’s happening in public and private schools throughout Henrico County.

Greenwood Elementary School

Greenwood welcomed families for Back-to-School Night Sept. 17 as its youngest students joined the school’s five-house system during House Week. The school also began recognizing students who met weekly academic and behavioral goals, with its first “House Achievement” celebration scheduled Sept. 18. Student leadership expands next week when Heads of House and Spirit Captains begin leading morning meetings.

Ratcliffe Elementary School

Ratcliffe launched its fall fundraiser Sept. 14, asking families to help support student activities through Sept. 25. The school also announced a Fluency Fair for Sept. 24, an evening event centered on helping families support reading fluency.

Ridge Elementary School

Ridge students spent the week on hands-on classroom work, including fourth-graders studying how watersheds can be affected by pollution and younger students using manipulatives to practice grouping by tens. Ridge families and staff also attended a Richmond Flying Squirrels game as a school fundraiser.

Elko Middle School

Elko is limiting student screen time to 50% or less as part of an instructional push toward structured note-taking, graphic organizers, text annotation and other hands-on learning strategies. The school also announced that eighth-grade counselor Gracyn Rawls will leave Sept. 25; Ms. Bolding, who worked in Elko’s counseling department last year, will serve as interim eighth-grade counselor.

The Steward School

Steward junior Henry Pietrantoni ’28 was selected as one of five 2026 Richmond Forum Scholars. The program gives selected students opportunities to work behind the scenes at Richmond Forum programs and interact with featured speakers. Pietrantoni is a member of Steward’s cross-country team, Model United Nations team and Student Council Association and also tutors younger students.

Steward also launched age-level versions of its “I Am a Spartan” framework this week, adapting the school’s core principles for students at different developmental stages.

Henrico County Public Schools

Henrico Schools continued its fall specialty-center open-house schedule this week, including programs at John Rolfe, Tuckahoe, Wilder and Moody middle schools. Middle-school specialty-center applications are open through Oct. 5; high-school specialty-center applications open Sept. 28.
