A weekly look at some of what’s happening in public and private schools throughout Henrico County.
Greenwood Elementary School
More than 250 students registered for Greenwood's morning clubs for the first quarter of the school year, with the programs beginning Sept. 8. The school also selected classroom representatives in grades one through five for its Student Advisory Committee Sept. 9 and held its annual Grandparents Luncheon Sept. 11 in the school's Gator Gardens. Greenwood also is continuing its collection of aluminum pop tabs to support the Ronald McDonald House in Richmond, with students earning points for their school "houses" as they fill collection buckets.
Elko Middle School
Elko launched its annual digital-citizenship curriculum during the week, with students scheduled to participate in three advisory lessons this semester addressing internet safety, artificial-intelligence ethics, screen-time balance and maintaining a positive digital footprint. Seventh- and eighth-graders also began having opportunities Sept. 9 to hear directly from representatives of Henrico high-school specialty centers through the school's "Level Up Elko" initiative. The school held its Back-to-School Night Sept. 9 and launched its World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser Sept. 11.
Henrico Virtual Academy
HVA celebrated Arts in Education Week Sept. 9 by showcasing student artwork from the 2025-26 school year.
Henrico County Public Schools
Applications opened Sept. 10 for the division's middle-school specialty centers and will remain open through Oct. 5. The fall open-house schedule continues Sept. 15 with sessions at John Rolfe Middle School's Center for Innovation and Tuckahoe Middle School's International Baccalaureate program, followed Sept. 16 by an open house for Wilder Middle School's Gifted Young Scholars Academy.
High-school specialty-center applications open Sept. 28 and close Nov. 13.
Henrico Schools also is seeking feedback about the staggered-start model it used to begin the 2026-27 school year. Students in grades six and nine, families and staff were to receive surveys during the week of Sept. 7 about what worked and what could be improved in future years. Sixth- and ninth-graders were given an opportunity to complete the survey during advisory classes.
Pocahontas Middle School
The school's PTA hosted a sixth-grade Hawk Hangout Sept. 10, an after-school social event for sixth-graders. The school also was preparing to begin its fall PTA fundraiser Sept. 15.
The Steward School
The Steward School held its annual Convocation Sept. 10, formally opening the school year with a procession pairing junior kindergarten and kindergarten students with their senior "buddies." The school's Buddy Program connects younger students with seniors who serve as informal mentors during the year. Convocation also included student musical performances and a schoolwide spelling bee. Steward presented its 2026 Alumni Achievement Award to William "Bunt" Young, a 1982 graduate and three-time Emmy Award-winning cinematographer who now serves as an adjunct professor at VCUarts Cinema.
The school also introduced "stewardship of nature" as its schoolwide theme for 2026-27. Middle School students signed Steward's Honor Code following Convocation, with Upper School students and students in grades one through five scheduled to sign later in September.
Steward also held its Middle School Back-to-School Night Sept. 10 and welcomed college representatives from William & Mary and the University of Richmond that day.
