Several Henrico County Police officers, and the division as a whole, were recognized this week by the Virginia State Police’s Help Eliminate Auto Theft program for their efforts to reduce vehicle theft and related crimes.
During the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation Annual Conference in Williamsburg Aug. 26, three Henrico officers – Diana McCarthy, Brandon Tyler and Kerri Winn – were named finalists in the “Individual” category for departments serving populations of more than 100,000, while Officers Garret Christen and Austin Hileman each received certificates of merit.
The Henrico Police Division also earned the top award in the “Agency” category for large jurisdictions, recognizing the department’s overall commitment to combating auto theft.
The HEAT Awards have been presented in some form annually since the program’s launch in 1992. They highlight the work of law enforcement agencies and personnel across Virginia who help prevent vehicle theft through education, enforcement, and community outreach.
“Auto theft prevention starts with small, everyday choices,” said First Sgt. Peter Lazear, the statewide HEAT program coordinator. “Stealing a car is often a crime of opportunity, so taking proactive steps, like locking your vehicle or parking in well-lit areas, is a simple and effective way to reduce the risk.”
