Henrico police chief: New safety measures planned at future county events
Following a disturbance that prompted some momentary panic for some attendees at the Dorey Park Fourth of July celebration July 3, Henrico County will be implementing new safety measures at future events.
That message came Monday from Henrico Police Chief Eric English.
"While the vast majority of attendees come to enjoy these events peacefully, a small number of individuals have created unsafe situations that cannot be ignored," English said in announcing the change. "Our goal is simple: to provide a safe, welcoming environment for all residents and visitors. Unfortunately, the actions of a few have made these steps necessary, but the safety and enjoyment of these events for our community remains our highest priority."
English did not specify what specific changes would be implemented.
During the Friday night event at Dorey Park, multiple fights involving youngsters broke out, and police recovered a firearm from one of them and charged him with possession of a firearm by a juvenile.
The incidents prompted organizers to set off fireworks earlier than planned, at about 9:15 p.m. instead of closer to 10 p.m.
