Henrico Education Foundation launches alumni network, plans inaugural 5K Fun Run/Walk
The Henrico Education Foundation is expanding its efforts to engage the Henrico County Public Schools community by launching a new alumni network and celebrating its debut with an inaugural 5K Fun Run/Walk this fall.
The foundation recently introduced Henrico Alumni & Friends, an online platform designed to reconnect graduates of Henrico County Public Schools with one another while also welcoming current and former educators, families and community supporters. Foundation leaders say the initiative is intended to strengthen relationships among generations of HCPS alumni while creating new opportunities to support current students.
For more than 30 years, the Henrico Education Foundation has partnered with Henrico County Public Schools to provide resources and support for students, teachers and schools. Officials said the new alumni platform builds on that mission by recognizing that thousands of HCPS graduates remain connected to the school division and can play an important role in its future.
Through the online network, members can reconnect with classmates, stay informed about school and foundation activities, learn about volunteer opportunities, celebrate milestones and find ways to give back to Henrico schools.
To officially launch the initiative, the foundation will host the Henrico Alumni & Friends Inaugural 5K Fun Run/Walk Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. at Deep Run Park.
Rather than focusing on competition, organizers say the event is designed as a community celebration that brings together alumni, students, educators and supporters in person while encouraging school pride.
Participants are encouraged to wear the colors of their high school and compete in a friendly "battle of the high schools." The school with the highest number of registered participants will receive a traveling trophy and year-long bragging rights.
"We are thrilled to invite our alumni and supporters to join Henrico Alumni & Friends," said Jennifer Boyle, chief executive officer of the Henrico Education Foundation. "Whether you graduated last year or decades ago, this platform is a place to reconnect and continue the proud tradition of Henrico spirit, and the race is a great way to kick things off."
The event is open to everyone, including alumni, current and prospective students, families, educators and community members. Organizers say it will be stroller- and pet-friendly and will feature food trucks, live music, school mascots, children's activities and participation awards.
HEF hopes the Fun Run becomes an annual tradition that serves as a visible gathering point for the growing alumni network while encouraging continued involvement in the foundation's efforts throughout the year.
Registration for the event is open, with discounted family registration packages available for households with three to five members. Those interested also can learn more about volunteer opportunities through the Henrico Education Foundation.
