Local resident Tom Strei will lead the CMTA Richmond Walk 4 CMT at Henrico's Dorey Park Sunday, June 14 at 10 a.m., helping to raise money to fight the rare, incurable disease he lives with daily.

CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth) is an inheritable, progressive neuromuscular disease that affects about 135,000 people in the United States, including an estimated 550 people in the Richmond metro area and 3,500 throughout Virginia. It causes muscle weakness, impaired balance, difficulty walking, and nerve degeneration. Many people go years before receiving an accurate diagnosis or proper medical care.

The walk itself is a half-mile loop (participants are welcome to walk any distance they are comfortable with) and is open to all ages and abilities.

Proceeds benefit the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and its ongoing research to develop treatments and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

CMTA is a community-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the development of new treatments for CMT, improve the quality of life for those with CMT, and ultimately find a cure. CMTA has invested more than $33 million in research since 2008.

Dorey Park is located at Darbytown Road in Varina.
