AAA warns Virginia drivers as peak deer collision season begins

AAA is urging Virginia motorists to watch for deer as the peak season for animal-related crashes begins.

Virginia recorded 6,526 deer-related crashes in 2025, according to DMV data cited by AAA. Nearly half occurred from October through December. The average animal-strike insurance claim among Virginia AAA policyholders reached $6,581 last year, up 37% from five years earlier.

Drivers should use extra caution at dawn and dusk, scan both sides of the road, use high beams when appropriate and expect that more deer may follow after one crosses. AAA advises drivers not to swerve if a deer enters their path because leaving the lane can cause a more serious crash.

If a collision occurs, motorists should move to a safe location when possible, contact law enforcement, activate hazard lights and avoid approaching the animal.
