The University of Richmond's Modlin Center for the Arts will present SPA Trio on Friday, Feb. 13 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall. SPA Trio consists of soprano Susanna Phillips, violist Paul Neubauer, and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. Phillips received the Metropolitan Opera's 2010 Beverly Sills Artist Award and has enjoyed a career singing opera's leading ladies. Neubauer, called "a master musician" by The New York Times, was appointed principal violist of the New York Philharmonic at age 21. Anne-Marie McDermott is a prolific solo and collaborative pianist whose career has seemingly spanned the whole world - and composers as diverse as Bach and Scriabin. Click here for details.
The Henrico Theatre, 305 East Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs, will show two movies this weekend: Hidden Figures (2016, 127 minutes, PG) at 7 p.m. Feb. 13-14 and The Wiz (1978, 134 minutes, G) at 3 p.m. Feb. 14-15. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will celebrate the ornithological event of the season—the Great Backyard Bird Count—on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy a fun, family-friendly morning featuring tabling by the Richmond Audubon Society and Riverine Master Naturalists, bird-themed LEGO activities with Bricks4Kidz, and the chance to meet feathered animal ambassadors from the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Two visual artists, Charlotte B. Heath and Ron Navroski, will also be on site sharing ornithology-inspired work, along with guided birding tours throughout the event. The Richmond Reptile Expo will take place Saturday, Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The expo will provide a large selection of legal and healthy reptiles and supplies in a safe and informative environment Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 6-11, and free for children five and under. Henrico Recreation and Parks will present "Society's Best Kept Secret: The Life of Designer Ann Lowe" at Deep Run Recreation Center (Springfield Room) on Sunday, Feb. 15 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ann Lowe's dress-designing career encompasses the story of Jacqueline Kennedy's stunning wedding dress and give us a fascinating glimpse into American history. Lowe pressed beyond Jim Crow barriers and became one of New York's leading dress designers to such prominent families as the DuPonts, Roosevelts, Rockefellers and Kennedys.
