Henrico County will host its first-ever Juneteenth Jamboree on Friday, June 20. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. with a community parade starting at Baker Elementary School and ending at Varina High School. Following the parade, teams from six of the county’s high schools – Varina, Highland Springs, J.R. Tucker, Glen Allen, Deep Run and Henrico – will square off in seven-on-seven football games at Varina HS. Shawn Mears will announce the game and there will be entertainment by DJ Amare and food trucks. Admission is free. Henrico Schools' clear and small bag policy will be in effect at the football game. Minors must be accompanied by a chaperone 21 or over. IDs are required. The Henrico Theatre Company will take a comical look at one of the country's most beloved voices in "Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End" June 20-21 at 7 p.m. and June 22 at 3 p.m. at the Henrico Theatre in Highland Springs. Discover the story behind this American humorist who championed women’s lives with wit that sprang from the truth. Starring Amy Berlin as Erma Bombeck. Directed by Melissa Rayford. HATTheatre in Henrico's West End will present "Teacher, Teach" at 7:30 p.m. June 20 and at 2 p.m. June 22. The play takes place during a retirement party for teacher, Mrs. Web. Set in the auditorium at Tranquility Middle School, Mrs. Web and her fellow teachers revisit some of her favorite stories spanning her 35-year career. With heart, humor and some harsh realities, this play proves what unsung heroes our teachers truly are. The play is written by Randy Wright, a UR graduate who taught for over 30 years in public schools. He wrote "Teacher, Teach" to honor teachers and the students who helped make his life far more interesting and rewarding. Henrico County will commemorate the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth at its annual celebration on Saturday, June 21 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Dorey Park.
The event will feature a vendor fair with 160 local businesses, a kid's zone with inflatables, a community stage showcasing local talent, and a variety of food. This year's musical theme is Go-Go music, a uniquely regional sound that’s deeply rooted in the African American community, symbolizing resilience and unity. Musical acts will include EU featuring Sugar Bear, the Chuck Brown Band, and Art of Noise featuring DJ Lonnie B. The night will end with a fireworks show. Admission is free. The Lakeside "Livin' La Vida Loca" 90s-themed market, a local collaborative market event presented by Twisted Carrot Farm, will take place Sunday, June 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Farmers' Market, 6110 Lakeside Avenue.
While the collaborative market is open weekly indoors, the Livin' La Vida Loca Market will expand into the outdoor pavilion to include even more local vendors (60+) to shop from. There also will be a craft workshop, food trucks and music. Admission is free, open to the community and family-friendly. No pets. Click here for details.
