In anticipation of service disruptions due to the pending winter storm, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is automatically extending some Virginia driver’s licenses and ID cards by 30 calendar days, agency officials announced Jan. 23.

TAhe 7,000 or so Virginia driver’s licenses and ID cards with expiration dates between Jan. 24 and 31 will remain valid for an additional 30 calendar days, officials said.

Affected credentials will automatically reflect the revised expiration date if scanned by law enforcement or other authorized entities.

The effects of the winter storm may require DMV customer service centers to close or adjust hours across the state. Customers should check dmv.virginia.gov/locations for the latest information on delays or closures before visiting an office.

Many DMV transactions can be completed online. Customers who renewed last time in a DMV office may be eligible to renew at dmv.virginia.gov.
