This Day in Henrico History: Oct. 4 – Topgolf opens in Henrico’s Westwood area
On Oct. 4, 2019, Topgolf Richmond opened at 2308 Westwood Avenue in Henrico, bringing a three-level golf-and-entertainment complex to an area county officials were positioning for major redevelopment.
The 55,000-square-foot venue featured climate-controlled hitting bays, food and drink service, music and event space and a Topgolf Swing Suite with virtual games. Under an agreement with the Henrico Economic Development Authority, the company pledged to invest at least $25.5 million and create 350 jobs. It was Topgolf’s 57th facility worldwide at the time.
County officials viewed the opening as significant beyond the attraction itself. Topgolf was the first major development completed after Henrico adopted the Westwood Redevelopment Overlay District in late 2018. The roughly 530-acre district was intended to encourage a mix of redevelopment while protecting existing businesses in the area west of Interstate 195 and near Richmond’s fast-growing Scott’s Addition neighborhood.
At the ribbon cutting, County Manager John Vithoulkas described the emerging area as “Scott’s Addition 2.0.” Other investment already was following nearby, including Kinsale Insurance’s planned five-story headquarters.
Topgolf’s opening therefore marked both the arrival of a prominent regional entertainment destination and an early milestone in Henrico’s effort to reshape the Westwood area through reinvestment and mixed-use development.
