An estimated 20,000 people or more attended Henrico County's Juneteenth Celebration June 21 at Dorey Park in Varina to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the occasion, which in 1865 marked the official end of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19 that year that Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the U.S. Civil War, thereby freeing the last remaining slaves who had not yet learned of the North's victory in the war.
