As part of Pride Month, the Urban Financial Services Coalition – Richmond, in collaboration with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, Women in the NAACP (Henrico Branch), Firehouse Theatre, and the Richmond LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, will host a reception and private screening of the critically acclaimed documentary The Lavender Scare on Wednesday, June 25, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Varina Area Library.

The event is designed as an evening of reflection and conversation centered on LGBTQ+ history, equity and justice.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required at https://Lavender-Scare.eventbrite.com.

The Lavender Scare sheds light on a dark and often forgotten chapter in U.S. history — the Cold War-era persecution of LGBTQ+ federal workers. Narrated by Glenn Close and featuring voices such as Cynthia Nixon, Zachary Quinto, and David Hyde Pierce, the documentary spotlights the consequences of government-sanctioned discrimination and the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

“This Pride Month, we are proud to offer a space for honest dialogue and historical truth,” said Adrienne Whitaker, national president of the Urban Financial Services Coalition Foundation. “This event is not just about remembering the past—it’s about activating our shared commitment to inclusion, equity, and access for all.”
