Obituary - Susan Mary Schatzle Gidley

Susan Mary (Schatzle) Gidley, aged 83, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025. Daughter of LCDR Paul S. Schatzle, USN, and Ruth A. Schatzle, she was born in Jacksonville, FL in 1942. In 1965 she married her loving husband of 60 years, Lawrence L. Gidley. In addition to her husband Larry, she is survived by her children, Paul M. Gidley of Richmond and Theresa M. Thompson (husband Swen) of Blacksburg, VA, along with her two grandchildren Ben and Hannah Wynn, also of Blacksburg, VA. She had two brothers, Stephen P. Schatzle who resides in Genoa, NV, and Christopher J. Schatzle of San Diego, CA, who preceded her in death, as well as multiple nieces and nephews.

Susan was a graduate of Mercy College of Nursing in San Diego, and held a B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University, along with a M.S. from Central Missouri State University. She worked as both a registered nurse (RN), and an industrial hygienist. Susan was a person of deep religious faith who had an unlimited love for her family. Known for her humor, along with an outgoing and friendly demeanor, she made numerous friends over the years, especially during her extensive volunteer work at St. Mary's and St. Michael's Catholic churches and Our Lady of Hope Health Center. She will be deeply missed by those who had the opportunity to know her over her lifetime.

The family will receive visitors Monday, June 23rd from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road in Glen Allen, followed by a funeral mass and inurnment. A reception will be held afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Christo Rey High School.
