Robert Leigh "Bob" Jones, 96, walked into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, October 2, 2025. Born in Naruna, Virginia, his family later moved to La Crosse, Virginia, in Mecklenburg County. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jewel Ann Shelton Jones; his parents, Robert Lee Jones and Carrie C. Jones Kidd; and his two brothers, John Jones and Robert Carwile Jones. His father died before he was born in an automobile accident, and he had the privilege of being brought up by a loving stepfather, Captain Allen Kidd, beginning when he was three years old.
He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne Jones Johnson (Pete); his son, Mark Allen Jones (Vanessa); three grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson (Natalie), Connor Jones, and Colton Jones; one great-grandchild, Kilian Johnson; his brother- and sister-in-law, Michael and Mary Lee Shelton; and numerous nieces and nephews who proudly called him Uncle Bob.
Shortly after graduation from La Crosse High School, he was called into military service in the U.S. Army, with basic training at Fort Rucker, Alabama; leadership school at Fort Jackson, South Carolina; and then assignment to the Army Artillery Division in Munich, Germany, where he proudly served his country during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he began employment with General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC), where he worked for 31 years. While not wanting to retire completely, he took on numerous very part-time jobs before settling in with the company his son founded, SIMA Financial Group. He was graciously given the title of Office Support, which he carried with pride. He worked right up until his final day.
The family will welcome family and friends on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23059, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., a Celebration of Life at 11 a.m., and a reception to follow at 12 noon. Interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended for over 64 years.
