Robert (Bob) Haywood Smith, Jr, 82, of Henrico, VA passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Smith, Sr; his mother, Margaret Harrington Smith; and his sister, Anne Smith Friedman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Carol Anne; his sons, Robert H. Smith III and Edmund J. Smith; his favorite daughter-in-law, Lara Long Smith; and the light of his eye, his granddaughter Scotlyn Rose Smith. Bob began his career in residential construction in Raleigh, NC which led him and his family to Richmond, VA. A confident contributor to the residential construction industry, he retired in 2008 after over 45 years with Stock Building Supply. While at Stock, he was recognized by the Home Builders Association of Richmond as the 1991 Mayo Award recipient, an honor of which he was truly proud.

In his earlier years, Bob enjoyed his time as a football referee where he officiated all levels of football from pee wee to college and after retirement, he continued as an official’s evaluator. Always the proud father, he spent time with his boys, Robbie and Eddie, coaching them in baseball at Tuckahoe Little League, going fishing, skiing, and playing golf with them.

Bob cherished the time he and his family spent in Wintergreen, VA where he and Carol have a second home. His passion for playing golf and skiing made it one of his favorite places in the world. The day he was able to watch his granddaughter Scottie hit the slopes brought him immense joy.

A friend to everyone he met, Bob was always happy and ready to enjoy a bourbon or cigar. A loyal husband, father, and friend, he loved sharing his stories and could make anyone smile with his humor and candor. He will be missed and forever be remembered as an extremely generous man with honor and integrity who cared deeply for his family and friends.
