It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Philip Joseph Cassidy (Papa Phil), who died peacefully on September 27, 2025, in Glen Allen, Virginia, after a courageous and long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Phil was born in 1938 and raised in Kearney, NJ with his eight siblings. He graduated from Seton Hall University and then met Mary Kay Baie while working at United Airlines where he was a ticketing agent and she was a stewardess. Phil and Mary Kay married in November 1964. Phil’s career with Eastman Kodak moved them around the country and he ultimately retired in Atlanta, GA. Phil and Mary Kay enjoyed a lovely retirement, traveling between Destin, FL, North Kingstown, RI, and Richmond, VA spending time with family and friends.
Phil was a devoted family man, whose greatest joys in life were his family and his six beloved grandchildren, Samantha Cassidy Walsh, Kayla Cassidy, Donovan Cassidy, Colin Cassidy, Trey Watts, and Cassidy Watts. His love for them was boundless, and he treasured every moment that they spent together.
Phil, a giant among men, was exceedingly proud of his Irish heritage, which meant so much to him. He was a most accomplished man in so many ways. Completely self-made by hard work and determination. He grew to incredible heights from the humblest of beginnings. Phil took great pride in his roots, which infused his life with rich traditions and values. He was also a lifelong fan of the New York Giants, showing unwavering loyalty to his team through thick and thin. Phil also, was an avid horse lover. His horse racing days brought him much joy.
Phil had a long and successful career with Eastman Kodak Company, dedicating almost 40 years to the organization. His work ethic and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of everyone who worked with him and for him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Kay Cassidy, who was his steadfast partner throughout their journey together. He is also survived by his loving son, Scott Cassidy (Alison Carcieri-Cassidy); and his daughter, Mia Cassidy Watts (Ethan Brown); his siblings, Kevin Cassidy (Susan Cassidy), Bernie Law, Pat Melvin (Bob Melvin), Brian Cassidy (Donna Cassidy), and Hank Allen, who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts.
Phil spent his life making family his number one priority. He planned many family trips and get-togethers to spend time and make memories with his wife, kids, and grandkids. It was what mattered most to him. He engrained his sense of family in both of his children, who will carry on his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Cassidy; his father, Dominic Cassidy; and his younger brothers, Sean and Brendan Cassidy and Ronnie Allen.
Phil will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His spirit, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
There will be a celebration of life service for a life well lived at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at St. Michaels Catholic Church on 4491 Springfield Rd, Glen Allen.
