Michael F. Callahan, 69, died on May 11, 2025, in Glen Allen, Virginia. Born on September 15, 1955, in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, Michael lived a life marked by steadfast integrity, deep faith, and a passion for the things he loved most—his faith, his family, his teams, his music, and his travels.
Michael pursued academic excellence early in life, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Computer Science from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. He later continued his education at the University of Richmond, where he obtained a Master’s of Business Administration. His professional path reflected the same dedication and discipline that defined all aspects of his life. Michael worked for over thirty years for the Department of Motor Vehicles of Virginia.
He was a man who met life’s challenges with resilience and focus. Known for his matter-of-fact demeanor and no-nonsense approach to adversity, Michael had an unwavering ability to adjust his expectations when life was difficult, while remaining grounded in principle. His deep and abiding Catholic faith was central to his identity; he strove daily to live according to its precepts. A particularly meaningful moment in his spiritual journey came during a trip to Italy when he had the opportunity to see Pope Benedict—a memory he cherished deeply.
Michael shared a rich and adventurous life with his beloved wife Deanna. Together they explored the world—traveling through Ireland’s green hillsides, Italy’s historic cities, Poland’s history and its heartlands, and Canada’s scenic landscapes. These journeys were not just vacations but expressions of their shared curiosity and love of discovery.
A devoted father and grandfather, Michael is lovingly remembered by his son Brandon (Tanya), daughter Hillary Wakefield, and grandson James Wakefield. He also held close bonds with dear cousins Mollie (Joseph) Scharnus and H. Lee (Linda) Callaway.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents George “Jack” and Martha Callahan, his stepmother Patricia, as well as by his beloved aunt and uncle, Rita and Tobey Callaway.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Michael was a die-hard fan of the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles. Two unforgettable highlights of his life were attending Cal Ripken Jr.’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame and Ray Lewis’s induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Music was another enduring passion for Michael. He delighted in live performances across nearly every music genre and attended hundreds of concerts throughout the United States and abroad. Whether it was a local venue or an international stage, music brought him joy and connection that resonated throughout his life.
Michael's legacy is one of strength, loyalty, faithfulness, and quiet perseverance. He will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
May his memory be a blessing to those who love him.
