Leslie “Sonny” Courtney III, born February 2, 1954, passed away on June 16, 2025. Sonny was a devoted husband, proud father, adoring grandfather, loving brother, and loyal friend. His larger-than-life personality always brightened every room he walked into. Sonny was truly the heart of his family—the one who brought joy, laughter, and light to every moment.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ruth Courtney, his forever partner and best friend. Together, they built a life full of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. Sonny was a devoted father to his daughters, Angel Carroll (Anthony) and Brooke Givens (Paul), and his greatest joy in life came from his role as “Papa” to four adored grandchildren: Aidan “TB” Carroll, Riley “Princess” Thompson, Reed “Termite” Thompson, and Savannah “Squirt” Givens.

He is also survived by his sister, Linda Anderson; his brother- and sister-in-law, Ronald “Bubba” Via (Becky); and nieces and nephews: Casey Bowles (Steven), Justin Via (Sarah), Joshua Barnette, Kelly Anderson, Bambi Feighner (Jeffrey), and Stephanie Smith (Chris) and many others who impacted his life. Sonny cherished every moment spent with his family and loved them all fiercely.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Augustus Courtney II and Margaret Mahone Courtney, his sister, Betty “Teata” Barnette, brother-in-laws Edward Barnette and Jimmy Anderson, and nephew Travis Via.

Sonny had a natural gift for humor—he was a born comedian, always ready with a witty response and a quick laugh. His energy was infectious, his presence unforgettable. He loved coaching his daughters' softball teams throughout their childhood and was a lifelong NASCAR fan. On weekends, he and Ruth found joy in simple pleasures: relaxing at the beach, people-watching, walking around Wal-Mart and spending time with his cousin Leonard and wife Pam.

Professionally, Sonny was proud of his work with Fas Mart and the Henrico County Government, but his most cherished role was that of a husband, father and grandfather. His commitment to his family was unwavering. He gave his whole heart and soul to the people he loved, and they loved him more than words could ever express.

Sonny will be remembered not only for his quick wit and bright smile, but for the way he made everyone feel welcome and seen. His spirit, love, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. He was the center of his family’s world, and his memory will live on through every story, every shared laugh, and every beat of love that continues in his name.

He was truly loved beyond measure and will be missed more than words can say.

The family will welcome visitors on Saturday, June 21st from 2:00-4:00 PM at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. A celebration, and we do mean celebration, of life will occur at a later date to honor his positive impact on our lives and the joy he brought to each of us.
